Alter or Replace? A Practical Guide to Clothing Alterations
Before you retire a garment you love — or a new purchase that doesn't quite fit — it's worth knowing what a tailor can and can't change. Most fit problems are solvable, often for far less than replacing the piece.
What alterations can fix
- Hemming trousers, skirts and sleeves to the right length.
- Taking in or letting out the waist, sides and seat for a cleaner fit.
- Tapering a jacket or shirt that's too boxy.
- Zipper replacement and seam, lining and button repairs.
What's harder — and when to replace
Shoulders on a jacket, or a garment that's several sizes too small, are difficult or costly to change; sometimes replacing is the sensible call. Very worn or damaged fabric may also not hold a new seam. We'll tell you honestly when an alteration is worth it and when it isn't.
Getting the most from your clothes
A quick hem or taper can make an affordable garment look tailored, and timely repairs extend the life of the pieces you wear most. Bring a few items together and we'll assess them in one visit.
